New England 2013: New Hampshire

Robert Frost’s home in Franconia, New Hampshire where he loved to look out the front porch to the mountains and wander through the woods on a snowy evening.

Franconia Notch Aerial Tramway up Cannon Mountain.  We are past peak color here in central New Hampshire, but the oranges and golds are vivid still.

The famous Old Man of the Mountain, a New Hampshire icon, collapsed in 2003.  A memorial recreates the look of it.

The Flume at Franconia is a narrow slot canyon that makes a wonderful, though not solitary, hike.

The Basin at Franconia featured a great hike to view a big pothole formed by the Pemigewasset River as well as waterfalls.

Last Sunday we attended an Episcopal church with Elaine and Fred—very high church and formal.  Lovely choir with Elaine singing, good sermon, meaningful ritual.  This Sunday we attended a tiny informal non-denominational community church in Bethlehem, NH.  Praise music to an accordion and then a half hour of Pastor talking and Bible study as the sermon.  So different, but God was certainly in both places.  We enjoy experiencing different churches as we travel.

I love the covered bridges.  They were covered mainly to protect the timbers and planks.  Some were called kissing bridges when they provided a hidden spot to steal a kiss.

We had lunch at the Mt. Washington Grand Hotel.  So beautiful
